We’ve made it through the first year of the 1:1 program. I’m happy to announce that we had very few damages of the 495 computers in student hands. Damages included 2 computers that were a complete loss with accidental liquid damage, 3 screens that were broken, and many chargers that needed to be replaced. When you just count the computers, we are at just 1% damage. That’s a GREAT rate! Thank you to all students for being responsible with your machines!
Parents who had a charge at the end of the year for missing parts or damage: Please make sure you get that money turned in to the High School Office to Barb Salger by June 12. After that date you will need to take it to Karrie Bartling at Central Office.
All balances must be paid for you get “take home” rights next fall. In addition, each person will need to pay the $50 or complete the 15 hours for the 2014-15 school year.
The $50 collected from students at the beginning of the year has helped pay for the expenses of the damaged machines and kept the replacement costs low to families. The screens are a $400 fix and each of the 3 students only had to pay the 1st Strike cost of $75. We will continue to collect the $50 from each participating student annually to use for repairs, supplies, and chargers for those that need them. When a student graduates from VSHS they will have had access to a $1000 computer for only $200 or 60 hours of community service. We anticipate we may have additional work that needs to be done as the computers get older.
As stated in our policies, families can elect to join the coop each year at a cost of $50 or 15 hours of community service per student. Once this is done, the student is then able to take a machine home with them outside of the school day. We are accepting hours this year from June 1-September 1. Our goal is for all students wanting to do Community Service for their fee to have them all done before August’s Roll Out. We will have our annual Roll Out night for students and families the week before school starts next fall. We haven’t set those dates yet, but I will communicate that information as we get closer.
We follow the same rules and guidelines for the 1:1 Community Service Hours as the Black and Gold Hours. You can find more information about the requirements by visiting the websites below. Some asked last year, “If I start doing hours and decide to pay instead, can my 1:1 hours be transferred to Black and Gold hours?”-YES! “What if my hours are more than 15hrs? Can some of them go to B&G?” - YES! There were 130 students/families that took advantage of Community Service option last year and there are many opportunities in the area this summer! I hope that our community can benefit again from our students earning “take home” rights for their machine. It really is a “win win” for everyone.
Have a great summer and I I’ll be in contact again soon!
