Local elementary students learn these important lessons and others each year in a way that they look forward to.

Fire Prevention Week is among the most-anticipated for local elementary students has come to an end, leaving memories of fire truck rides, visits to fire stations, and a keener understanding of how to prevent and survive a fire.

The Vinton Fire Department spent more than 200 man-hours in classroom activities this week. Several visited class rooms or pre-schools. Others gave tours of the fire station, explaining the purpose of each vehicle and helping the children learn how to handle a fire hose. Many more from both Vinton and Garrison helped on Thursday, giving scores of children a ride around Vinton on the top of a fire truck.
