Although the farmers have yet to plant their corn in the fields surrounding Vinton, full ears have appeared in our city. The 20 fiberglass structures, about seven feet high, arrived on a flatbed trailer Friday afternoon. The members of the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts found sponsors for the 20 structures, which will adorn businesses and other facilities in a variety of colors and themes.

“The hospital's will have a pink theme, and we also an Iowa and Iowa State theme,” said Guild member Brian Parr, one of the organizers of the project.

Therese Foth, a guild member and Farmers Savings Bank & Trust employee, said the bank has chosen a financial theme for its ear of corn.

While most of the themes have been chosen, it will be up to local artists to submit the actual designs for some of the ears.

The Rabe Hardware ear arrived painted in a red, white and blue “Freedom Isn't Free” theme. The rest will be painted over the next several weeks.

TK March 6, 2015, 9:16 pm This is a great idea for the community. Covering Iowa and Iowa State is wonderful but UNI should be represented as well. Why not honor all three state schools?
