A wastewater force main broke Thursday afternoon in the Vinton, releasing about 700 gallons of untreated wastewater to a nearby ditch.
City workers shut off pumps at the K Avenue pumping station to stop the discharge while repairing the force main. Some wastewater flowed into Hinkle Creek.
Residents should keep children and pets away from the area for 48 hours.
The city is disinfecting the flow area with lime and taking water samples for testing.
The city reported the incident to the DNR, which is is monitoring the cleanup.
