Remember when we said the Shellsburg Area Community Group had received a Keep Iowa Beautiful Grant to help with improvements to the Shellsburg Memorial Park? Well many of you have noticed the first installment!! The grant money was used to “top” a dying tree in the SE corner of the Memorial Park to twelve feet. Then on July 15th and 16th Brian Parr of Vinton used his creativity and a chain saw to sculpt a bear welcoming everyone to Bear Creek, the creek which flows through both of our city parks.

If you haven’t stopped by to get acquainted with the bear, be sure and check her out. (We’re assuming it’s a mommy bear since there are two little cubs following her around!) We are so fortunate to have a person with Brian’s talent nearby and we really appreciate his efforts in getting the tree carved prior to RAGBRAI coming through town. Brian’s fees are being also being paid with the Keep Iowa Beautiful grant money.

Plans for a crushed limestone trail and small parking lot are planned for the remaining grant money and we’ll keep you posted as this develops.
