Volleyball Champions! The North Eden Willing Workers’ intermediate volleyball team won their age-group championship at the Benton County Volleyball Tournament on March 20th. Caroline Lang, Morgan Lang, Kate Hyland, Samantha Walton, Anna Becker, and Lydia Radeke triumphed over Harrison Willing Workers in the championship match. The NEWW junior team, composed of Ashlie Meyer, Sydney Walton, Sophia Kreutner, Breanna Happel, McKenna Kingsbury, and Rachel Rollinger, also performed well.

At the March 6th meeting, NEWW 4-Hers had a lot to teach each other. Landon Bierschenk demonstrated how to fold a flag while his assistant explained the meaning of each fold. It may be common knowledge that the American flag cannot touch the ground, but Landon also taught us that blue folds envelop red, symbolizing a sunset, and that the final triangular shape represents a Colonial tricorn hat.

With spring break approaching, Ashlie Meyer chose to present on how to plan a vacation. She noted that families should consider many costs – including pet care, travel, lodging, food, activities, and souvenirs – when creating a vacation budget. Dylan Geater’s presentation explored the ancient art of blacksmithing, describing the process of heating and shaping metals. He explained the finer points of temperature and color, listed necessary tools, and concluded that blacksmithing is both fun and difficult to master.

Weston Bierschenk taught the club to make a stress ball from household materials. After filling a balloon with flour, Weston slipped it inside several more balloons to prevent leaks; his homemade stress ball turned out squishy and safe. McKenna Kingsbury mixed 4 chopped apples, 6 crushed Snickers bars, and one box of whipped cream to make a simple and delicious Apple Snicker Salad, perfect for family gatherings or a tasty snack. And, Brianna Happel demonstrated how to cross-stitch.

The club enjoyed a game of Simon Says led by Jesse Pladsen and snacks provided by the Meyer, Elwick, and Bierschenk families. Twenty-eight members attended. At next month’s meeting, Connie McClintock, a county fair project judge, will speak at 5:00 sharp. She will give tips on how to interview with judges and how to create a blue-ribbon project write-up. Members, don’t miss it!

The club also held a sewing workshop on Friday, March 11th. Megan Ternus taught seven NEWW members and one guest how to make an elastic headband. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to use their creativity.
