The husband of a Belle Plaine lawyer who has been at the center of a Benton County controversy is now running for county supervisor.

Mark Zahradnik, whose wife Jennifer recently filed suit against the county in the land use change involving Dean Brown’s Red Shed Auto Repair business, has filed papers for the District 3 Supervisor seat now held by Don Frese. Frese has said he would not seek re-election. Zahradnik is so far the only candidate for that office; he has filed to run in the Republican primary.

The District 3 Supervisor race is one of many on the ballot for the June primary election.

Two Democrats, Paula Denison of Van Horne, and Dennis R. Mathaus, Marengo, have filed papers for the Iowa House District 75 primary, with the winner to challenge incumbent Dawn Pettengill in November.

Senate District 38 incumbent Tim Kapucian will run unopposed in the the primary; no Democrats filed papers for that office. The deadline for state and federal office filing has passed.

March 30 is the filing deadline for county candidates.

In federal races, several Democrats have entered the race for the right to challenge long-time Republican Charles Grassley. Former Lt. Gov. Patty Judge and State Senator Robert M. Hogg, along with Thomas Fiegen and Bob Krause, will appear on the Democratic ballots for U.S. Senator.

First-term GOP Congressman Rob Blum faces no primary opposition. Two candidates who sought the Iowa House District 1 seat two years ago will compete for the right to face Blum in November: Pat Murphy and Monica Vernon. Murphy won the nomination over Vernon and several other candidates in 2014, but lost to Blum in the general election.

Below is the listing of candidates who had filed papers as of Monday morning; the county ballots will become final after March 30.
