There were about 60 athletes, playing 3 to a group in Saturday's Special Olympics Unified Mini Golf Tournament at the Vinton Skate Center.

"We had over 100 people participating, including the volunteers," says Brian Larkin.

The event was sponsored by Koops Outdoor Equipment and Stanley Roofing.

The event is the only Special Olympics mini golf tournament held in the state.

"We brought players from all over Eastern Iowa. It was a Unified tournament," said Larkin.

The Special Olympics Iowa Web site describes Special Olympics Unified Sports® as an "opportunity for people without intellectual disabilities to join in the sports experience by playing on a team with athletes with intellectual disabilities. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding."

"It was an awesome day at the 2nd Annual Special Olympics Iowa Miniature Golf Tournament," says Larkin. "Thank you to all the volunteers and athletes that participated. And a special thank you to our sponsors."
