The Vinton City Council meeting Thursday evening included something that is not usually part of a government gathering -- an auction. The dilapated property at 514 East 12th Street in southeast Vinton was listed for bid after the last city council meeting. The council announced that it would take bids at Thursday's meeting. At first, nobody stood when Mayor John Watson asked if anyone in attendance had come to offer the minimum $5,000 bid. Finally, one man stood and offered $5,001. Mayor Watson then reviewed the requirements the high bidder must meet. The house must be demolished and removed by Dec. 31. The buyer must pay legal fees and last year's taxes. Watson said that while he has fixed up many houses, he would not try to fix that house. Then the mayor asked if anyone else had a bid. Jeff Pohlman, who lives next to the property, stood and offered $5,002. No other bids were offered, and the Mayor declared the property sold to Pohlman. Another vacant property in need of repairs, at 715 West Ninth Street, was also on the agenda. The home, owned by Ann Winans, has a leaking roof and other problems. Neighbors have been complaining about the appearance of the yard, said Mayor Watson. Winan's son, Nolan, told the council he had found a buyer who wants to restore the property. The council, after discussing the issue, agreed to allow the sale to proceed. The new buyers, Harry Rublek, agreed to clean up the yard before winter begins. The council also gave approval for the second annual Veterans Patriotic Christmas Parade. The parade takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, before Santa Claus makes his traditional entry at the courthouse tree lighting. The parade route will include 4th and 5th streets in the downtown area. Everyone is invited to partipate in the parade, which is being organized by the Vinton VFW, AMVETS and Legion. Floats and vehicles with patriotic or holiday themes are welcome. The council also renewed a Class C beer and wine permit including Sunday sales for The Peony Family Restaurant.
