Sarah Uthoff, Kirkwood Community College research librarian, spoke to more than 30 Laura Ingalls Wilder fans at the August 18 Center Point Log Cabin Festival.

The Wilder authority did a costumed talk about the Little House author’s many moves as a child around the pioneer Midwest. Sarah said that when the Ingallses lived in a dugout on The Banks of Plum Creek it was like being a rabbit living in a hill. And she added, “Snakes LOVE dugouts.”

Later Pa borrowed against a wheat crop to build a frame house--which had actual glass windows. The family thought to be able to look out windows was” just like having a picture on the wall.” But the wheat was eaten by grasshoppers and after two years of crop failure, they moved again.

Following the program, there were refreshments and children’s activities at the Strait Log Cabin.

The Cabin Festival was organized by Dennis and Linda Schlicht.
