At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2022, a 2011 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Marion Schminke, 90 of Shellsburg pulled away from the stop sign heading south on 30th Ave. and into the path Nathan Harrelson, 21 of Vinton. Harrelson was traveling west on 61st St. Lane (known as County Home Road) in a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro.
The pickup was struck by the Camero and after the impact both vehicles came to rest in the southwest ditch landing on their top. Harrelson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, Schminke was not.
Schminke did not survive the accident, and Harrelson was airlifted to a Cedar Rapids hospital, no word on his condition.
Memorial services for Marion will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, August 18, 2022 at New Covenant Bible Church (3090 N. Center Point Rd.) in Cedar Rapids, with Pastor Jay Haugh officiating. Private family interment will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Shellsburg, prior to the service.
Center Point Ambulance, Vinton Fire Department, Vinton Police Department and Benton County Sheriff's Department responded to the accident.
