Long before security cameras helped solve last Friday's bomb threat at VInton-Shellsburg High School, principal Kirk Johnson and other administrators had begun working with security companies and the Vinton Police Department on obtaining and placing additional cameras.

The camera project is on the list of PPEL (Physical Plant and Equipment Levy) projects the school board approved during its meeting Monday.

Assistant High School Principal Ryan Davis told the board that the new cameras will cover all of the "blind spots" on the high school campus. He said he has been working with the VPD on the project, and that the police department is satisifed that the new cameras will offer the most security possible.

Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock said last week's incident is evidence that the camera project is an important one. Hainstock also praised VSHS Principal Kirk Johnson for his quick response, saying they had a plan prepared for such an incident and followed it well. Johnson said the students responded well, calmly evacuating the building in less then five minutes. He thanked the Vinton Police Department and Benton County Sheriff's Office for their efficiency in handling the incident. The building was evacuated at 10:18 a.m. Friday and students returned to class shortly after noon.
