At the Union Community School District's School Board Meeting, the Board voted to accept a contribution of $250,000 to name a new gymnasium in honor of Kate Craft.
Kate passed away in December 2023 at the tender age of 16. She valiantly fought a two year battle battle with glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. The Craft family made the donation to honor their daughter a student at the school.
She was an honor student as well as a standout athlete in the sports of basketball, swimming, soccer, track and field. Kate's parents, Matt and Sarah Craft, wanted to use this opportunity to honor the passion she had for sports.
"As per the agreement, the family is making a minimum $250,000 donation to be used for the naming rights to a new gym. One of the conditions is that it be a community gym that people can access more readily than they can the current school gym," said Superintendent John Howard.
The proposed gym is included in a $20.5 million bond referendum Union School District voters will vote on in the November 5th election.
Should the referendum fail, School officials will continue to attempt to complete the project. "The Craft family has donated funds for something that is really needed in our community," Howard said.
