The Vinton
Public Library will be spending the week of
October 20-26, 2024, celebrating its Friends of the Library group as part of
the 19th annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week.
The Friends of the Library will celebrate
by having a table at the Vinton Parks & Recreation Department Spooktacular
Day in downtown Vinton on Saturday, October 26, 2024. We will be handing out free books for kids, while
supplies last, on the Courthouse lawn at 10:00 am. Then, during the Halloween costume parade at
10:45 am the group will be handing out goodie bags for the kids in front of
McClure Financial.
The Friends of the Vinton Public Library was established in 2023 and has raised over $12,000 for the library to date. This year's Friends of the Libraries Week kicks off a campaign to raise funds to purchase new mobile shelving for the children's library. This shelving will increase the capacity for books in the children's library and allow for more space during children's programs. Made up of community members, the Friends are a major factor in the library's progress, advocating for funding and volunteering their time to assist with fundraising efforts.
Friends of the Library President Greg Walston shares "The main goal of our Friends organization is to always promote reading, and to support the outreach of the Vinton Public Library through a variety of opportunities. Financial support from our community is a vital part of our mission. Please email vintonia.friendsofthelibrary@gmail.com to learn more about the week's activities, and to find out how to become a member of the Friends."
The
Friends of the Vinton Public Library is a 501(c)3 organization that supports
and promotes library services through outreach, volunteering, and
fundraising. Anyone who wishes to donate
towards the mobile shelving project can do so by writing a check payable to
Friends of the Vinton Public Library and drop it off at the library circulation
desk.
National Friends of Libraries Week is coordinated by United for Libraries, a
division of the American Library Association. United for Libraries supports
those who govern, promote, advocate, and fundraise for libraries, and brings
together library Trustees/board members, advocates, Friends Groups, library
Foundations, and those who work with them into a partnership that creates a
powerful force for libraries. For more information, visit www.ala.org/united.
