The Vinton Kiwanis recently hosted Meredith Zuspann and Kelsey Fish, co-owners and co-directors of Creative Kids, who shared exciting updates about their growing childcare and education programs.

Creative Kids operates at two locations-Tilford Elementary and Shellsburg Elementary. They offer a Kindergarten Wrap-Around program that currently serves approximately 30 children full-time between the two sites. Enrollment is expected to match or exceed that number for the upcoming school year.

To enhance learning experiences, Creative Kids collaborates with the Vinton Public Library and Grant Wood AEA for activities as well as other organizations. They also coordinate efforts with Tiny Vikes to align their educational goals. A key takeaway from parent surveys revealed that transportation challenges were a significant barrier for families utilizing preschool services. However, the new program locations have helped alleviate this issue.

Looking ahead, Zuspann and Fish are working to incorporate more field trips into their summer programming,  as well as bringing special events to the children during the year. During the school year, Creative Kids offers a before-and-after school program for preschoolers through age 12, running from 6:00-7:30 a.m. and after school until 6:00 p.m. Currently, 52 children participate at Tilford, while 37 are enrolled at Shellsburg. The program employs 21 part-time staff members to support these efforts.

Friday early dismissal days are particularly engaging, featuring guest speakers from organizations like the Nature Center, magic shows, and arts and crafts activities. The goal is to provide structure and routine for children while making these afternoons both educational and fun.

This past year, Creative Kids introduced a winter break program, which provided families with flexible childcare options during the holiday season. The initiative was well-received and proved beneficial for many local families.

Summer enrollment opens on March 1, with programming that includes frequent field trips, such as visits to Bloomsbury Farm and local zoos. With access to a school bus, children have opportunities to explore beyond their usual surroundings.

Creative Kids currently employs four full-time staff members and five part-time workers throughout the year, ensuring high-quality care and enriching experiences for local children.
