Following last week’s major windstorm, many homes and businesses still need repairs. Now that a good part of the cleanup has been done, many property owners are wondering if they will need a building permit to complete repairs. A good rule of thumb is that any structural repairs or reconstruction will require a permit.
There are important reasons for getting a permit. First, it is a check on the contractor doing the work. Any general construction contractor must be registered with the city. This ensures that the contractor is insured and is less likely to be someone trying to take advantage of the situation.
The second reason for getting a permit is that the work will be inspected to ensure that the work completed will meet current building code standards. Inspections will make sure a structure is safe for occupants. Inspections are also important for any future resale of the property.
The third reason for getting a permit is that it is legally required under city ordinances. It is important for property owners to realize that the city understands the current situation. By requiring building permits, the city’s aim is to take care of its residents and businesses by ensuring safety and quality of the work done for our residents and businesses.
Building permits are not expensive and can either be obtained at Vinton City Hall, 110 West 3rd Street or by visiting the city’s website at www.vintoniowa.net and clicking on the “Forms and Maps” link on the left-hand side of the homepage. Please call Vinton City Coordinator, Andy Lent at 319-472-4707 if you have any questions concerning city building permits.
