Former Vinton-Shellsburg School Board President will not face any prison time after pleading guilty to election fraud and perjury of statement.

Lyons was sentenced today in Benton County District Court. He was sentenced to five years and fined $750 plus costs on each count, with the prison sentences suspended. He was also placed on supervised probation for two years.

Lyons was charged in April for voting and running for election as a school board candidate even though he knew he was not eligible to vote or run for public because a previous felony conviction had made him ineligible to vote, and his voting rights had not yet been restored.

PM September 29, 2011, 10:40 pm As expected...but would\'ve liked to see some creative sentencing. The guy wanted to \"serve the community\" I would rather see him doing some community service rather than writing a little check for a measly $750...that wouldn\'t even cover all the cost involved in proving the guy guilty!
TW September 30, 2011, 1:26 pm Clearly what Pat did was wrong and I won\'t attempt to defend that. However, Pat has been an active leader in our community since he came back home. He resigned from a number of positions upon being charged, including church, civic, and school positions of leadership and service. He gave up things he obviously loved to do and was good at. He and I have served together in a number of groups. We don\'t always agree, and our leadership styles are substantially different, but I respect his commitment to those he served. Community service is a great obligation to repay your debt to society. But for Pat, not being able to serve is his punishment.
