Fundraising to replace firefighting gear and equipment lost to the July 11th storm, got a boost Sunday when State Farm presented the Garrison Fire Department with a $10,000 check.

State Farm Agent John Leonard of Vinton, Iowa, presented the grant to the Garrison firefighters during the Fire Department’s community pancake breakfast Sunday morning.

The July windstorm caused widespread damage in Benton County and destroyed the Garrison Fire Department building. The collapse damaged fire and EMS apparatus inside and the storm damaged or scattered gear and equipment. “State Farm’s mission is to help our neighbors recover from the unexpected,” Leonard said. “Garrison’s firefighters play a vital role in protecting the community and State Farm is pleased to be able to help them get the department back to where it was before this devastating storm.”

Among other things, the grant will help replace fire suits, fire hoses, bunker gear, furniture, a 2,000-gallon water storage container and emergency response radios.

TK October 11, 2011, 1:44 pm Very nice to see the Garrison Fire Station taking shape. On the morning of the wind storm the first people to stop at our house was someone from the Garrison Fire Dept. Even after their station was destroyed they were out in their personal vehicles ensuring no one was injured and needed help.
