Area residents saw their first significant snow of the winter Thursday morning.

Shovels and plows, boots and gloves -- along with the more recreational seasonal items such as sleds and snowmobilles -- now have their traditional white winter companion.

A couple of inches of wind-blown snow covers the ground in Vinton this morning, and weather forecasters say residents can expect a few more inches throughout the day.
