The National Day of Prayer included at least one group of area residents who met under the flag pole at the Benton County Courthouse in Vinton on Thursday, May 5.
The first Thursday of May is declared the National Day of Prayer. Many Americans meet at noon on that occasion to pray, particularly for the country.
In Vinton, Rev. Lowell Fink and Rev. Jim Blair formed a circle with another 13 residents. Their prayer listed included national leaders, state leaders and even local officials. The group also prayed for area churches and pastors.
"Next year, the first Thursday in May," said Rev. Fink. "I will be here."
The National Day of Prayer was established by Congress in 1952; the first National Day of Prayer event took place in 1983.
