The Benton County Above the Influence Coalition and the Benton County Sheriff’s Department collaborated to complete alcohol compliance checks in Benton County on September 21, 2012 as part of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) project funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Benton County businesses had a 100% compliance rate, a respectable rate for any time of year, but particularly during Vinton-Shellsburg and Benton Community Homecoming weeks.

Alcohol compliance checks are a strategy, sometimes referred to as a “sting operation”, used to confirm that businesses are checking IDs and refusing sales to minors. Deputy Dave Upah has assisted with these checks since June 2012, partnering with various youth to complete the task.

Businesses that passed compliance checks in September 2012 include: Alco Discount Store (Vinton), Newhall First Stop (Newhall), Casey’s General Stores (Vinton and Urbana), D.J. C-Stores (Norway and Van Horne), Fareway (Vinton), Grieder’s Beverage Depot (Belle Plaine), Fast Stop (Vinton), Zip Mart (Belle Plaine), John’s Qwik Stop (Vinton), Blairstown Quick Stop (Blairstown), Keystone Mini-Mart (Keystone), and Ehlinger’s Express (Vinton).
