Vinton Mayor John Watson is one of two Independent candidates for the District 2 seat now held by Dave Vermedahl, who is not seeking re-election.

"I would like to become a Benton County Supervisor because it is an opportunity to continue serving people," says Watson.

Below is Watson's summary of his experience and vision:

1 Life long resident of Vinton. Grew up in rural Vinton. 2. Married 41 years to wife Donna, son Jason, daughter Raquel. Grandchildren, Jax, Logan Bo & JolieMae. 3. Landlord/Owner of rural and city properties. 4. Graduate of Washington High School, Vinton. Attended Kirkwood Community College 5. Marine Corps veteran 6. Worked at US Post Office 35 years, 20 years as Postmaster. 7. I’ve been a city councilmen 4 years and Mayor of Vinton 18 years. Member of Virginia Gay Hospital Board, Vinton Unlimited, Benton County Solid Waste Commission, Rebuild the Jail Committee, American Legion. 8. My involvement of the flood of 2008 and windstorm of 2011 were extensive. I worked along side of volunteers, Army Reserves, city, county and state employees. I have first hand knowledge and experience with FEMA, EPA, and the DNR. 9. Goals/Issues - Continue cooperation with Benton County Economic Development Group. Investigate Benton County Landfill longevity and try to keep open. Review county development/sub division regulations to see if appropriate for the current economic times. Continue cooperation with all communities in the county. Keep good relationship with county employees, 10. If elected by the citizens of Benton County: I will carry a phone for citizens input I will respond to e-mails and phone calls in a timely manner. I will investigate problems personally to try to find solutions. I will attend city council meetings in every town in Benton County no less than once a year. I will travel the roads of the county and listen to my rural constituents. I will spend all the hours it takes to represent all of Benton County. Thank you, John R Watson
