Someday, Kelby Robb hopes to run the PR office for a major sports team -- either an National Hockey League team or the Green Bay Packers of the NFL.
Her most recent project is exactly the kind of thing she hopes to be doing on full-time basis from an office at a place like Lambeau Field.
Kelby recently completed what the first edition of a new online publication called "Packer Nation" as part of her Editing and Design course at UNI with Journalist/Editor/Professor Anelia Dimitrova.
"The assignment was given to us halfway through the semester, in early October. We spent the rest of the semester on it. We wrapped up today," said Kelby, a 2009 V-S graduate. "We were not assigned to write the material; that wasn't the purpose of the assignment. The purpose of the assignment was to practice the elements of design -- formatting, picture/text placement, etc. But I decided to go above these requirements and take this opportunity to create the perfect portfolio piece. I created all of the ads and wrote all of the included materials/articles except the cover story, although I did write the 400-word introduction."
Kelby, a senior at the University of Northern Iowa majoring in Public Relations, with minors in Marketing and Journalism, also took the majority of the pictures herself.
The magazine includes a cover, letter from the editor, 8 Tips for Visiting Lambeau Field, articles entitled "A Visitor's Experience", "Lambeau Field: America's Most Iconic Sports Venue", "What to Expect from Clay Matthews," A photo essay of Packer fans, a timeline of the life of Vince Lombardi and six ads.
The next step, says Kelby, re-formatting it into a 8.5x11 size and sending it to the Packers Public Relations Department in Green Bay.
Although Kelby hopes to work in one of those major sports PR positions, she says of her career ambitions: "Those are my ultimate career goals, but I just want a position that makes me happy and by which I can continue to challenge myself and make myself better every day."
