Because of the generous support of the people of our communities we were able to once again achieve our Tree of Lights goals this year. Our major purchase will be a portable ultrasound machine. Currently ultrasound is used in the Imaging Department as an adjunct to digital mammography. Non-invasive and painless, ultrasound only requires exposure to the area being examined. Instead of applying low doses if ionizing radiation, an ultrasound probe simply uses high-frequency sound waves.
In addition to using the portable ultrasound as part of the breast health program, the equipment will also benefit skilled nursing patients and surgical patients. Portable ultrasound will be used to facilitate PICC line placement. A PICC line is, by definition and per its acronym, a peripherally inserted central catheter. Similar to a standard IV, a PICC is inserted in the arm, usually in the upper arm, under the benefits of ultrasound visualization. PICC insertions are less invasive than central lines, have decreased complication risk associated with them, and can remain for a longer duration than other central or periphery access devices.
In addition to the portable ultrasound device, the Foundation will also be able to purchase the following items the various clinics have requested;
Two regular wheelchairs
Two xl wheelchairs
A wheelchair scale
3 baby scales
3 halogen exam lights
A microscope
Again, thank you very much for your ongoing support of the Virginia Gay Hospital & Clinics Tradition of Healing.
