Members of the Benton Development Group (BDG) say that the decision by the Benton County Board of Supervisors to reduce its funding of BDG from $47,000 this budget year to $20,000 for the coming year is a decision that threatens the future of the organization, as well as the job of its director.

The BDG board met Thursday night, and its members plan to attend Tuesday morning's budget hearing and supervisors meeting to make their case for continued funding at the $47,000 level.

"This is a short-term decision that will have a long-term effect on Benton County. I love my job and I am concerned about the consequences of this decision," said BDG Executive Director Ranea Becker. "They cut $27,000 from $47,000 last year -- it hurts BDG and threatens our survival -- how does an organization run on a $28,000 budget?"

Under the proposed budget, BDG would receive $20,000 from the county and $8,000 from funding for special projects from other sources.

Becker said that the supervisors told the BDG members to "go to the communities of the county" for funding.

"But those communities have all set their budgets and have no extra money to give anyway," she said.

All three supervisors -- Jason Sanders, Don Frese and Terry Hertle -- agreed on the budget decision.

Sanders said the decision was purely a budgeting issue and the limited availability of funds. He said the supervisors are not trying to eliminate Becker's position.

"What they do with their funds is their decision," he said.

BL March 7, 2013, 11:25 pm You can\'t even buy enough stamps for mailings with $20,000. Even if you could, who\'s gonna answer the phone IF you get some interest in what you sent out? This decision is a giant step backward for economic development in Benton County. Supervisors, please reconsider.
DD March 8, 2013, 7:08 am Would you please wake up Supervisors? We need a proactive group like BDG that tries to bring NEW Business to our county, which in turn will bring NEW Jobs to our county. If you were unemployed, your attitude would change.
DR March 8, 2013, 11:45 am The recent decision to cut the funding for the Benton Development Group will be disastrous for future economic development in Benton County. We must not let the Supervisors make this mistake. The Benton Development Group is the pipeline for businesses that are looking to expand or build. Without this group and without someone there to take the lead, Benton County will simply be passed over by these business. This decision tells everyone that Benton County has given up on growth. That economic development, also known as JOBS for our communities, is not a priority. I would urge all of you to contact your supervisor immediately and ask them to reconsider this decision.
NH March 8, 2013, 2:48 pm This decision does much more than just eliminate a position in Benton County. It also eliminates the disbursement of information about potential economic development leads for all of Benton County. The director of BDG is the only person in Benton County who receives economic development leads from the State of Iowa. Without this position, Vinton and Benton County as a whole will be left in the dust while other communities throughout the state are given vital information about businesses looking at our region to locate a business. In the last month, I have worked with BDG on 3 different potential projects which have an anticipated job creation of over 100 new positions in Vinton (Benton County). Economic Development takes time and the fruits of its labor are hard to recognize and measure, but without this connection and the resources that BDG provides Vinton and Benton County, we will have no chance of attracting new business to our region. This is more than losing one job in Benton County...it means losing the possibility of hundreds.
BK March 9, 2013, 8:36 am Actually it looks like the supervisors are looking at eliminating the BDG executive position. If they were just looking at budget concerns; I would think the cut would be 1-2%, not over 50%. I don\'t know of anybody that would show a positive face and spirit for the amount they are expecting the director to make.
TH March 11, 2013, 2:35 pm Our company belongs to and supports BDG and its efforts. I am just curious, is there any way the group could self-sustain without government help? I don\'t like to depend on the government for anything. It may be better off in the long run to try and figure something out on your own rather than be frustrated when when cuts are made.
