The Benton County Above the Influence Coalition will host Training for Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS) sessions at the O-Zone in Urbana on June 30th, 2013 as part of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) project. ASAC’s SPF SIG project is funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

TIPS classes train servers and sellers of alcohol on proper sales techniques to help eliminate underage sales, decrease binge drinking and reduce liability concerns for businesses operating a liquor license. Participants learn effective ways of refusing service to intoxicated patrons, ways to recognize fake IDs or attempts to purchase underage, and receive suggestions on how to protect a business from legal action.

In addition to increasing staff knowledge base and protecting businesses, TIPS has other benefits. In some cases, bars and restaurants with TIPS-certified staff can receive a reduction on their Dram Shop insurance, sometimes up to a 20% discount. Businesses should contact their insurance provider for more information on this discount.

To register your employees for TIPS, contact Jenn Draper at 319-472-2443 or jdraper@asac.us. For more information about the Benton County Above the Influence Coalition or the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant, visit www.bcati.com.
