The members of the Breast Cancer Survivors were hoping for 200 participants when they began planning Friday evening's Party in Pink event. But by the time the last person had signed up, more than 600 had joined the walk and 5K run event. All of these people, along with many sponsors, donors and volunteers, helped to raise $8,500 for the Gifts of Hope fund, which helps pay for mammography service and radiology expenses for women who cannot afford them.

Virginia Gay Hospital Foundation Director Mike Timmermans thanked the breast cancer survivors and the many people in the community who have made Gifts of Hope possible, and urged every woman to contact the hospital for assistance.

Survivor Lisa Staab said that the survivors are there for each other, and for every woman who will deal with breast cancer in the future.

Staab, the youngest member of the local survivors group, was first diagnosed at age 31, even though she had none of the genetic risk factors for the disease.

"You dont just get cancer, you get through cancer," she told the audience before the race.

Staab advised women in the audience to visit a medical profession if "something doesn't seem right."

Dr. Maggie Mangold, whose mother, Lu Karr, is a survivor, told the audience that one in eight women will face breast cancer in her lifetime. She said that therre are 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. and that 40,000 women each year die from the disease.

SR June 29, 2013, 1:42 pm First off, I would like to commend all the women involved with the Benton County Survivors. You are an amazing group of women. You have all took your rough road in life and made it positive by helping others. What a gift.I am proud to say these AMAZING WOMEN WARRIORS are from my town/my county. Thank you!
I, my daughter, son\'s girlfriend and friend attended and walked the 5K. What a fabulous opportunity to see all runners/walkers who came out to support the cause. The sea of pink was incredible to see. We are already planning to mark our calendar for next year.
Walking into the unknown is a scary thing. And walking into your first year with this event had to have been scary as well. I must say for it being your first year all of you did an outstanding job. I applause each and everyone of you. I\'m sure never in your imagination did you expect the turn out you had and it must have been overwhelming. But YOU DID IT and it was a SUCCESS. You all have a reason to stand tall and be proud of your accomplishment. I can only see it getting bigger in the years to come. Be proud and keep up the great work ladies. Again I thank you.

CG July 1, 2013, 3:51 pm My sister Janet Woodhouse asked me to volunteer, and I am so glad she did. I had a great time! The participants were all so excited about being involved in this worthwhile and fun event. It was an honor being a part of it. Kudos to the organizers for all the time that went into making this happen and to all who took the time and effort to support this cause. Working together, we\'ll beat cancer!
