CENTRAL CITY: On September 16, 2013 Gene William Lewis, beloved husband of Sherry, lost his brave fight with cancer. Gene was born to Merton Chandle Lewis and Norma Emmeline Brewer Lewis of Central City on November 9, 1951.

The visitation will be at The First United Methodist Church, in Central City from 4:00-7:00 on Sunday, September 22nd 2013. The funeral services will be held at The First United Methodist Church in Central City on Monday, September 23rd 2013 at 10:30am, with luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Gene is survived by his wife Sherry and his children: Michelle Doty (Craig), Nathan W. Lewis (Heather), Patrick Rhodes (Karen) Eric Lewis, Amy Lewis (Shane), Larry Lewis, Joshua Lewis, and Mark Lewis. He is also survived by his grandchildren Nicholas, Jocelyn, Libby, Gavin, Cael, Megan, Todd, Alyssa, Kyler, Kaleb, and Bradley.He is also survived by his siblings Robert A. Lewis (Charlotte), John Lewis (Elise) and Janet Riggins (Frederick).

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his son Todd Andrew Lewis.

He was a loving husband and caring father. After raising their large family, Gene and Sherry opened their hearts and home to foster children. From 1999 to shortly after his diagnosis Gene and Sherry provided a safe home and love to many foster children.

Gene served for the US Navy prior to receiving an honorable discharge. Gene was a skilled mechanic and worked in manufacturing for Evergreen for the majority of his adult working life. During this time, he served as the shop steward and president of the UAW 1024. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping and boating with family and friends. Gene also loved movies and video games and was an avid sports fan. He was an avid animal lover and would take in any stray or animal in need. Gene had an engaging personality that welcomed the company of those around him. His welcoming personality, great sense of humor and the love he gave will be missed by all.

A special thank you to St. Luke’s hospice unit staff; you made Gene laugh, smile and took care of him like he was your own family. Thank you for making a difficult time for him and the family much easier.
