Murray L. Gallaher, 81, of Waterloo, died at Allen Memorial Hospital, on Friday October 11, 2013, complications of a stroke.
He was born on November 17, 1931 in Brandon, IA son of Murray and Lyle Burroughs Gallaher. He graduated from Van Horne High School in 1950 and received an AA degree in bookkeeping from AIC in Cedar Falls in 1988.
Murray served in the United States Navy as a Firefighter Instructor, receiving an honorable discharge in 1954.
Murray married Beverly Christensen at the Little Brown Church, Nashua on May 23, 1951, and she died July 4, 1983. He married Gloria Fortier Orton on July 29, 1989 in Waterloo.
He owned and operated Gallaher's Body Shop and Station in Vinton for many years. After moving to Waterloo he was a bookkeeper for Eastern IA Supply.
Murray was member of Cedar Valley Community Church. He was a longtime member of the Vinton Lions Club, where he was the secretary/treasurer for several years and belonged to the Vinton Golf and Country Club. He was a Boy Scout Troop Leader, member of the Waterloo American Legion and secretary/ treasurer for Waterloo Bowling Association Senior Stars. He loved to golf and fish.
He is survived by: his wife Gloria Gallaher of Waterloo; his step‑daughter Denise Orton of Texas ; his step‑granddaughter Alasha Dawn Orton “Cupcake” of Texas ; his sister Jayne (Robert) Lenehan of Denver, IA; his foster brother R.C. (Beverly) Lyons of St. Charles, IA; his foster brother Donald (Janice) Lyons of Dysart, IA; his foster sister Mary (Peter) Oakley of Camdenton, MO; his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by: 1st wife, and son Steven Lee Gallaher in 1991.
Services: 10:30 AM, Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Cedar Valley Community Church.
Visitation: Family will greet friends an hour before the service.
