VINTON: Eugene Edward Phelps, 91, of Vinton, died Saturday, December 21, 2013 at his home following a brief illness.
He was born May 26, 1922 in Belle Plaine to William Emrich and Beulah (Chowns) Phelps.
On December 20, 1940 he married Phyllis Jacobson in Lancaster, MO. The couple were married for 67 years. She preceded Eugene in death on September 1, 2009.
Prior to retiring, Eugene worked for Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids.
Eugene loved the outdoors where he spent time watching and feeding the squirrels and birds. He loved gospel music and enjoyed listening to it daily. He was also an expert chair caner and antique refinisher. Family was Eugene’s first priority and he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Eugene is survived by his daughters, Pearl (Charles) Stickels of Douds, Sheila (David Butts) Lynch of Garrison; his sons, Larry (Glennys) of Clarksville, TN, and Kevin (Teena) of Fairfield; of 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Tim Lynch; great grandson, Jordan Flecher; several brothers and sisters; and his son-in-law, Tom Lynch.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
