Don "Mac" McAtee, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Belle Plaine Nursing & Rehab in Belle Plaine following an extended illness. A Military Memorial Service will be 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone. Friends may register from 2 p.m. until service time Saturday. Private committal services will take place.

Donald Eugene McAtee was born Aug. 2, 1932, in Iowa City to Harold and Louella (Johnson) McAtee. He served his nation in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Jan. 10, 1953, he was united in marriage to Donna Poulson at Cedar Rapids.

As a youngster, Mac loved helping his grandpa Johnson on the farm. "Mac" was a self-employed truck driver and loved horses. His greatest joy came from time spent with his grandkids.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Donna of Van Horne; his sons, Doug McAtee of Toledo and David McAtee of Van Horne; his daughters, Denise Knudtson of Palo and Diana Dawes of Van Horne; his daughter-in-law, Janet McAtee of Kentucky; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother, Chuck McAtee of Clarence; and his sisters, Martha Ann McAtee and Susan (Randy) Thede, both of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Lydia Johnson; his parents; his son, Dale; and his brothers, Bob, Rex and Jim.
