VINTON: Donald Cashman, 86 of Cedar Rapid and formerly of Vinton died Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness.

Funeral Services: 2 PM, Monday, February 17, 2014, Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 East Sixth Street), Vinton. Visitation: One hour prior to service time. Interment: Big Grove Cemetery, near Garrison. A memorial fund has been established.

Don was born May 30, 1927 in Pilot Grove Township near Williamsburg to Edgar and Rebecca Roberts Cashman. He attended country school in Big Grove Township and graduated from Vinton’s Lincoln High School with the Class of 1946.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Kelley at the Presbyterian Church in Vinton on September 14, 1947.

Don retired from Cherry-Burrell Dairy Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids. In his leisure he enjoyed camping and fishing, especially their time spent at Yellow River Forest. He also took great pride in raising flower and vegetable gardens, raising horses and tinkering with engines with his son Ron.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Julie Bramow of Vinton; grandchildren, Ray (Brandi) Varnum of Vinton, Katheena (Casey) Shannon of Cedar Rapids and Amelia Brewer of Cedar Rapids; great grandchildren, Jaeden, James and Jonathan; his brother-in-law, John (Mardene) Kelley of Vinton; sister-in-law, Irene Cashman and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his son, Ron; a grandson, Jacob Merck; a brother, Russell Cashman, a sister, Rachel Fennern; a niece, Becky Cashman and two nephews, David Cashman and Daniel Fennern.
