VAN HORNE: Lucylle Helen Struve, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, March 9, 2014.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 10:30 am at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne with Rev. Grant Vander Velden of First Presbyterian Church in Waukon officiating. Interment will be held at Salem Cemetery in Van Horne. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 11th from 4 to 7 pm at Phillips Funeral home in Keystone. Friends may also call after 9 am at the church on Wednesday.
Lucylle was born on her grandfather's farm southeast of Van Horne on March 17, 1930 to Ralph and Joy (Rieke) Thompson. She attended country school Eldorado #9 until the family moved to Lucylle's grandmother's farm north of Van Horne when she was in fourth grade. She graduated from Van Horne High School class of 1947. Lucylle studied at ISTC, Iowa State Teachers College (now known as UNI) for two quarters as was required to get a country school teaching certificate. She then taught in Tama County country schools, first at Tama #2 and then Oneida #2.
On February 26, 1950 she married Darwin N. Struve. They reared six children. She is survived by her husband, Darwin, Van Horne; her children, Mary (Laverne) Halstead, Vinton, Helen Joy Nicholson, Cedar Rapids, Tom (Nancy) Struve, Palo, Betty Feinberg, Cedar Rapids, Jay (Ann) Struve, Iowa City, and Janet (Marvin) Moffitt, Vinton. They were blessed with sixteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren; with two additional expected this spring. Also surviving is her brother, Sheldon (Bernice) Thompson, Van Horne; and her sister-in-law, Erma.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bob Thompson and Cliff Thompson; and her sister, Marjorie Davis.
Lucylle was a lifelong active member of Salem United Methodist Church serving as financial secretary, district officer and member of the Dorcas Circle. She was a part time librarian and board member of the Van Horne Library, including involvement in the construction of the new library. She was an early supporter of the Old Creamery Theatre Company when it was in Garrison and continued to support the Theatre after it moved to Amana.
Lucylle was an avid book reader, encouraging her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to READ. She had a passion for high school and college wrestling-attending meets, watching on TV and listening on the radio. In addition she was an eternally optimistic Cubs fan.
Through the years she has attended countless sporting events, music and theatrical performances. She was very proud to be the parent, grandparent or great grandparent cheering from the stands.
She loved when her family was all together no matter how loud or crazy it got. Sitting around the dining room table with everyone telling stories and laughing was one of her most enjoyable moments.
A Memorial Fund has been established for Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne and the Van Horne Library.
