Dale Lee Yates, 71, died Thursday, May 8, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Palo Methodist Church followed by refreshments and conversation in the fellowship hall.
Dale was born August 20, 1942 in Cedar Rapids to Howard and Naomi (Little) Yates. He loved to learn consequently that drove him to change jobs. He cooked for Roosevelt Hotel and Royal Fork, worked at Collins Radio, was instructor at Kirkwood Community College in automotive, instructor for Diesel Engineering, he farmed, he was security guard at Duane Arnold Energy Center for ten years, he cooked and prospected in AZ, and most recently he worked at "The Outpost" in SD as cook and maintenance man.
He was Past Master of Benton City Lodge #81 at Shellsburg and Past Patron of white Lily Chapter #427. He also belonged to Scottish Rite & Shrine in Cedar Rapids. Dale was past volunteer for the Palo Fire Dept. He was a member of the Promak Treasure Hunting in Apache Jct. AZ.
Dale's hobbies included prospecting, rock hunting, jewelry making, reading, especially books on the Civil War, WW II and about Native Americans. He loved the outdoors. he and his friend Rob Sullivan prospected in AZ and fished in SD.
He is survived by Ellen Yates; his mother, Naomi; his sister and husband, Ruth and Ed Kibbie, five children, Steve, Jon, James, Aaron and Christina; thirteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren,; and his dogs, Bo and Vivian.
He was preceded in death by his father in 2012.
