Vinton—Marion R. Schwartz, 94, died Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Vinton Lutheran Home from complications of Alzheimers.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton with Pastor Mark Leckband officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery with Military Rites.

Marion was born January 25, 1920, in Van Horne, Iowa, the son of John and Gertie Burkey Schwartz. He attended country school through the 8th grade. Marion proudly served his country in the United States Army’s 15th Calvary during WWII. He was a member of Mt. Auburn’s Emil H. Dutler Post 177 American Legion.

On January 26, 1947, Marion was united in marriage with Lorna Luella Henkel at the Trinity Lutheran Church Parsonage in Vinton. Marion farmed for 25 years and worked for Benton County Maintenance, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. Marion was known as an expert fence builder and wood stacker. He like John Deere equipment and attending John Deere Days. Marion always had a story to tell and a smile on his face.

Marion is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lorna, of Vinton; four sons: Roger R. (Barbara) Schwartz of Winston-Salem, NC; Kevin L. (Shirley) Schwartz and Craig Schwartz both of Vinton and Steven L. (Nita) Schwartz of Stillwater, MN; four grandsons: Josh, Blaine, Nathan and Mitchell Schwartz; three great-grandsons, Cael, Caden and Keaton Schwartz; a great-granddaughter, Jordyn Schwartz and one brother, Alfred Schwartz, Vinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: twin brothers at birth, and Harry, Kenneth, Wayne and Eldon Schwartz; and two grandsons: Kenton and Daniel Schwartz.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
