Charles B. Sumner, age 81, of Vinton, Iowa, formerly of Newhall, died Thursday, June 5, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, June 9, 2014 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, Iowa officiated by Rev. Steven W. Rempfer. Visitation will take place 2:00-5:00 PM Sunday at St. John Lutheran Church. Interment with military honors will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Charles was born November 7, 1932 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Charles Newell and Anna (Blackstone) Sumner. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Barbara Butterfield on November 23, 1957 in Denver, Colorado. He worked in the shipping department at Quaker Oats until his retirement in 1997, and he was a member of the Cereal Workers Union Local 110.

Charles was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he enjoyed serving as a greeter. After his retirement, he and Barb travelled the United States in their RV (Wiki) and spent their winters in Texas. They had visited all fifty states. He also loved to hunt and fish, and he enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son Charles “Stoney” (Sherry) Sumner of Newhall, Iowa; son Carl “Brad” (Karen) Sumner of Omro, Wisconsin; daughter Colleen (Terry) Holland of Watkins, Iowa; four grandchildren: Cody Sumner of Vinton, Iowa, Nikolas Sumner of Newhall, Iowa; Zachery Bray of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Dakota Bray of Tucson, Arizona; and brother Edward (Janet) Sumner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Helen McVay, Phyllis Bruner, and Vivan Pyle; and two brothers: Robert and Jerald Sumner.
