TRAER—Larry Robert Flickinger, Sr., 72, died Monday, August 4, 2014, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo surrounded by his family. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2014, at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church in Traer with Pastor David Gensch officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 8, at the church.

Larry was born September 19, 1941, on the family farm south of Vinton to Cecil and Norma Wilhelmi Flickinger. He attended school in Vinton, graduating in 1959. On January 14, 1962, he was united in marriage to Sandra Vesely at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. Larry and Sandy lived in Vinton, and Larry worked at Ervin Motor Co. and the Standard Station before moving to Traer, where he owned and operated stations in Traer.

In 1973, he started working at John Deere in Waterloo, retiring in 1999. Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and was a collector of trains and John Deere toys. Larry was an active member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church and served as Church Council President for many years. He was a very generous man, even in his death as an organ donor.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, of Traer; sons: Larry (Denise) Flickinger, Jr. of Traer; Lon (Lori) Flickinger of Dysart; and Shannon (Jeni) Flickinger of Earlham; brothers: Wayne (Wanda) Flickinger of Las Cruces, NM; Ronnie Flickinger of Vinton; sisters: Karen (Dale) Hagen, Rosemary Boisen and Kris (Bob) Birker, all of Vinton; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dennis Michaelson of Prescott Valley, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, JoAnn Michaelson; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Flickinger and Pat Flickinger.
