VAN HORNE:
Roger Hanken, 79, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at St. Luke's Inpatient Hospice following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, November 17, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne with Father Jim Miller as Celebrant. Following the Mass, Military Rites will be conducted by Thomas F. Bevins American Legion Post #148 of Van Horne. Private Committal Services will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone. The casket will not be present at the church on Monday. A Memorial Fund has been established.
Roger was born February 13, 1935 on the family farm near Ossian to John and Agnes (Timp) Hanken and attended St. Francis DeSales High School.
Roger served his nation in an Engineer Battalion from 1954 to 1957 during the Korean War. He was a member of Thomas F. Bevins American Legion Post #148 of Van Horne.
On February 17, 1960, he was united in marriage to Diane Herzberger at Van Horne. She preceded him in death in 2006.
A member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne, he also belonged to the Van Horne Lions Club and served on the Van Horne City Council. He enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeyes and Nascar Racing and loved playing cards, working crossword puzzles, and reading the Gazette.
He is survived by his sons, Michael (Cindy) Hanken of Marshalltown and David (Lori) Hanken of Bloomington, MN; his grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Bland of Gladbrook, Elsie Hanken and Porter Hanken, both of Bloomington, MN; his great grandson, Presley Bland of Gladbrook; his brothers, Gervase (Marge) Hanken of Ossian and Orville (Germaine) Hanken of Maple Grove, MN; his sister, Inez Gallinaro of the Villages, FL; his sisters-in-law, Marie Hanken of Fremont, NE , and Susan (Kermit) Urbain of Owatonna, MN; his brother-in-law, Jim (Linda) Herzberger of Atkins and his special friend, LaVonne Ohde of Keystone.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son; his in-laws, Roy and Eva Lou Herzberger, and his brothers, Cyril, Donald, Vernon, and Alan Hanken.
