NEWHALL: Richard Folkmann, 86 of Newhall, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m, Tuesday, November 18th, at St. John Lutheran Church, Newhall with the Rev. Steven W. Rempfer officiating. Interment will be at St. John Cemetery near Newhall. Visitation will be held at Phillips Funeral Home, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2014.
Richard Frederick Folkmann was born September 26, 1928 rural South Amana, Iowa, the son of Christian and Sophie (Baack) Folkmann. He was baptized October 21, 1928 and confirmed April 18, 1943 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 and was a member of John Ward McGranahan American Legion Post #167. Richard was united in marriage to Gladys Marie Rammelsberg on December 8, 1954, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. Together they lived and farmed near Newhall, Iowa until he retired in 2012. In 1979, Richard and his son Dean were named Iowa Master Pork Producers.
Richard is survived by his wife Gladys and two children: Dean (Julie) Folkmann of Newhall and Diane Folkmann of Cedar Rapids; granddaughter Katelyn Folkmann of Newhall; two brothers, Raymond and Merlin (Laverna) Folkmann of Williamsburg; sister, Loretta Schlesselman of Williamsburg, sister-in-law, Verla Rammelsberg of Studio City, CA; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Clarence; and two sisters, Florence Schaefer and Edna Schmidt.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Vinton Lutheran Home or Central Lutheran School in Newhall. The family would like to thank the entire staffs of the Vinton Lutheran Home and Hospice Compassus for their excellent care of Richard and support of the family.
