ATKINS:
Gilmore Julius Schanbacher, 90, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Atkins died Friday, November 28, 2014 at the Vinton Lutheran Home.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins with Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating. Interment will be held at St. Stephen's Cemetery near Atkins. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the St. Stephen's church fellowship hall in Atkins. Memorials may be left for St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Central Lutheran School or the Vinton Lutheran Home.
Gilmore was born October 10, 1924 at Atkins to Julius and Gertrude (Keiper) Schanbacher. On September 7, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lolita Gerhold at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins.. She preceded him in death on May 9, 2014.
Gil farmed in the Atkins area. He had owned Newhall Locker and the Atkins Cash Grocery. He had worked for the Benton Community School District for over 45 years in maintenance, as a bus driver and doing his best to keep the lines straight on the football field.
A member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church he served as an Elder, and was a member of the Board of Education and the Cemetery Committee. Gill loved to spend time with his family and was an avid Cub's Fan.
He is survived by three daughters, Jan (Rev. Jerry) Doellinger of Cedar Rapids, JoAnn (Tom) Schumacher of Cedar Rapids and Jean (Rick) Von Dielingen of Seymour, IN; four grandchildren, Eric (Stephanie) Schumacher, Amy (Mark) Jungmann, Michelle (Bill) Quinn and Rachel Von Dielingen; two step grandchildren, Tony Schumacher and Chad (Christine) Doellinger; three great grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren and Billy; five step great grandchildren, Joshua, Connor, Kristina, Alexis and Andrew.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ben, Ed, and Bill Schanbacher; and his sisters, Amanda Schminke, and Dorothy Gallo.
