Cedar Falls -- Bette Mayhew, Cedar Falls (formerly of Vinton, IA), was born to Harold and Lillian Beresford on December 12, 1920 in Staunton, Virginia. She spent her childhood in both Iowa and Virginia and graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton in 1939. On March 1, 1947 she was united in marriage to Wayne Mayhew and soon after started their business known as Mayhew Electric. They successfully managed it together for the next 48 years.

Bette was a long time member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and was on the Memorial/Bequest Committee for 20 years. She had been a Brownie Troop leader, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 57, the Daughters of the American Revolution Mayflower Chapter, and worked at Fellers where she enjoyed her many customers.
In her spare time she enjoyed collecting antique dishes, reading, hiking and birding. She adored her grandchildren Sarah and Shane.

She is survived by her daughter Mary Jane (Dr. B. Keith) Crew of Cedar Falls; her grandchildren Sarah (Alex) Bridges and Shane (Alison) Rundall of Wilmette, IL; three great grandchildren Lily Hope, Harper and Owen of Wilmette, IL; two dear nieces Brooke Byam and Dr. Paige Soliday of Cincinnati, OH; and other nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1996; and her sister Jayne Byam.

Bette passed on Friday, November 28, 2014 at St. Lukes Hospice in Cedar Rapids, IA. The family would like to extend special thanks to the many wonderful staff members on 3 West and Hospice at St. Luke’s Hospital for the excellent care Bette received.

Memorial contributions may be given in her honor to the Vinton Presbyterian Church or St. Timothys United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls where Bette has been attending church for the past four years.

Visitation will be at Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton on Friday, December 5, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Vinton Presbyterian Church.
