VINTON – Carol Marie Timmer, 70, died Saturday, March 7, 2015, at the Vinton Lutheran Home following a battle with Alzheimer’s.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lisa Ross Thedens officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.
Carol was born May 31, 1944, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Matthias and Helen Martinsen Boehde. She graduated from Miles High School in Miles, Iowa, in 1961, and from State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1965.
On July 3, 1966, Carol was united in marriage with Mark Timmer at the Presbyterian Church in Miles. The couple lived in Iowa Falls, Agency and Mason City before moving to Vinton in June of 1981.
Carol worked as a Kindergarten teacher in Iowa Falls for 5 years. After that, she was a very active substitute teacher until her retirement in 2008.
Carol was a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school, was an Elder, a Deacon and also the Clerk of Session.
Carol was very active in the community. She was a member of P.E.O., the American Legion Auxiliary, the Mentor Lit Club and the Vinton Women’s Club, who named her Woman of the Year in 1993. She volunteered at Virginia Gay Hospital, the elementary school and helped with crafts at the Benton County Fair. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing golf and bridge, but her favorite annual activity was painting pumpkins with her grandchildren.
Carol is survived by her husband of 48 years, Mark Timmer, of Vinton; two sons, Craig Timmer of Waterloo and Mike (Melissa) Timmer of Minburn; two brothers, Dean (Norma) Boehde of Clinton and Dennis (Linda) Boehde of Sabula; and five grandchildren: Dylan, Samantha, Emma, Brycen and Aubree.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Allen, at birth.
Memorials may be directed to the Vinton Presbyterian Church.
