GARRISON - Doris M. Becker, 85, of Grundy Center, formerly of Garrison, died Sunday, March 22, 2015, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Vinton with Father Ardel Barta as Celebrant. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home and for an hour prior to Mass on Thursday at the church. Interment will be in the Garrison Cemetery, Garrison, Iowa.
Doris was born January 23, 1930, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the oldest of four children born to Isaac and Mildred Stringfellow Van Zante. She attended country school Rock Island of Leighton until the 8th grade. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1948.
On June 4, 1952, Doris was united in marriage with Vincent Becker at Sacred Heart Church in Waterloo. The couple moved to the Vinton/Garrison area in January of 1953. They owned the Becker Sawmill from 1964 until 2005. Doris enjoyed working side by side with her husband on the farm and at the sawmill.
Doris is survived by her son: Robert (Deb) Becker of Grundy Center; two sisters: Lois (Roy) Hess of Oskaloosa and Alice (Sam) Kool of Eddyville; one brother, Ralph (Janice) Van Zante of Blanco, TX; several nieces and nephews; two step-granddaughters: Miranda (Clint) Bruce of Alabama and Angela Kisling of Marion; and three step-great-grandsons, Isaac, Alex and Gabriel Bruce, and a step-great-granddaughter, Tenley, all of Alabama. She also had a great love for her dog, Cassie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vincent, on August 21, 2002; and a son, Michael, in 2014. Michael will be inurned with his mother at the cemetery on Thursday.
The family suggests memorials be directed to the Garrison Fire Department and the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit.
