Dale Vernon Petersen was born October 5, 1944 in Vinton to Donald and Ethel (Dengler) Petersen. Dale graduated from Geneseo High School with the Class of 1963. Dale later served in the United States Army Reserves. Dale worked at Mt. Auburn Grain for over twenty years.
Dale was united in marriage to Andrea Runyan on March 9, 1974 at the Mt. Auburn Methodist Church in Mt. Auburn.
After selling the elevator he worked for the Iowa DOT – Urbana Shop for twenty years, retiring in 2008. He then drove a rock truck for Coots Materials. Dale had many interests: he loved fishing trips to Whaley’s Resort with family and friends, he enjoyed helping Steve and Kenny on Runyan Farms. Many fun trips were taken to visit his Amish friend Simon and family. Dale also loved to take Dozer (Corey and Emily’s Boston Terrier) for rides which was always a treat. He also loved to have coffee with his buddies at FS and John’s Quick Stop. Dale gained an appreciation of Iowa native flowers and prairie grasses while doing planting projects for the Iowa DOT. Dale was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Mt. Auburn American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Andrea; his children, Kiffany Mahood, Emily (Corey) Oldfather, Eric Petersen, Evan Petersen; his grandchildren, Ethan Horak and Cade Oldfather; his sister, Karen Peshel; sisters-in-law, Pam Petersen and Beth Runyan; brother-in-law, Steve (Jama) Runyan and many nieces, nephews, cousins and very special friends.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Craig; mother and father-in-law, Huck and Marge Runyan and brother-in-law, Herb Peshel.
He lived a life richly and left us with a great example to follow. We loved him so very much and will miss him every single day and look so forward to seeing him again. The family would like to thank the ALS Clinic in Iowa City, Virginia Gay Hospital and Clinic and ER for taking care of Dale. Hospice Compassus has been a special blessing for their care and compassion these last few weeks
