Obituaries : Shirley Kearms

Vinton—Shirley Kearns, age 82, died Friday, December 31, 2010 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2011 at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton with Rev. David Gates officiating. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation is from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, January 2, at the funeral home.

Shirley Oma Kearns was born April 13, 1928 in Newton, Iowa, the daughter of Roscoe and Wilma Rogers Brock. She was raised in Newton and Cedar Falls, graduating from Iowa State Teachers High School before attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. On June 12, 1949 she married John Kearns in Cedar Falls. Shirley and John farmed near Vinton for more than sixty years. Shirley was a farm wife who enjoyed garage sales and playing cards with friends in her spare time.

She is survived by her husband, John; her son, Dan and his wife, Myra, and their sons, Lukas and Maxton, all of Vinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Charles, and her sister, Jeanette.

A memorial fund has been established.
