Obituaries : Harley Keith Noe

Harley Keith Noe, 88, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2022, at UnityPoint Transitional Center in Hiawatha, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hiawatha. Burial with military honors: Garrison Cemetery, Garrison, Iowa. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.

Harley was born Dec. 17, 1933, to Anna and Cecil Noe. He grew up on a farm near Garrison. Harley had three brothers, Leroy, Howard and Melvin, and two sisters, Myra (Klopping) and Lavon (John Jellison). Harley graduated from Garrison High School in 1952. He served two years in the U.S. Army and also graduated from Hanson Mechanical Trade School in 1957.

He worked for the Cedar Rapids Branch of International Harvester for four years and was employed for 35 years at the United States Postal Service Vehicle Maintenance Facility in Cedar Rapids. Harley enjoyed driving a charter bus all around the U.S. and in Canada. He gave flight lessons to many individuals and flew charter flights all across the U.S. He even piloted a flight from Wurzburg to Schweinfurt in Germany and along the Mexican Gulf coast. He loved to travel to meet new people and experience new cultures. His travels took him all over the European mainland, Iceland, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand and Central America.

On many of these trips he traveled with his lovely wife, Karen, whom he married in 1979. She brought four children into the marriage: Carlene (Greg Silhanek), Rob (Linda Wilson), Val Hermsen - deceased 2019; and Justin (Melissa Wilson). In retirement, he drove new semi-trailers directly from the factory to customers. Harley was a member of the AOPA, EAA, Associated Pilots of Iowa and the International Cessna 120/140 Pilots Association. He was a treasurer of the Cessna Association.

Harley was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha, Iowa. He was a treasurer for the church as well. He was blessed to be able to go on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in October 2018.

He had 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers.
