Frederick "Fred" Lawrence Lutz Jr., 76, of Walker, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion, Iowa. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at the funeral home, with Pastor Kevin Jones officiating. Cremation rites will follow services and a private committal service will take place at a later date.

Fred was born on Nov. 8, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frederick Sr. and Laura (Oakley) Lutz. He was a 1965 graduate of Marion High School. On Oct. 15, 1965, Fred was united in marriage to Peggy Lou Young. He served honorably with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Fred went on to work as a plumber for 40 years, before his retirement from Bowker Mechanical in 2010. He was a member of the Walker American Legion Post 376, Plumbers Union Local 125, Pheasants Forever, White Tail Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, and the North Linn Fish & Game Club. Together with his wife, they owned and operated the former Fred and Peggy's Bar & Grill in Troy Mills, Iowa, from 1984 until they sold it in 1997. Fred was an avid outdoorsman, an Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed morel mushroom hunting. He loved to watch his grandchildren at all their sporting events. Fred will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Fred is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 58 years, Peggy Lutz of Walker; three children, Sheila (Rod) Ericson of Walker, Bridget (Brian) Pflughaupt of Walker and Mike Lutz of Center Point, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jordan Ericson (Emily Ries), Zach (Molly) Ericson, Hunter Pflughaupt (Haley Anglea), Ty Pflughaupt, Tate Pflughaupt, Taylor Livengood (James O'Dell) and Nicole Lutz; four great-grandchildren, Hadley Ericson, Kent Ericson, Clara Ericson and Desmond O'Dell; and sister, Brenda Tackman of Garnavillo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; half-brother, Richard McMurrin; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Tackman.
