Obituaries : Paul F. Schellhase

Paul F. Schellhase, 82, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the Vinton Lutheran Home, following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 28, 2024, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Garrison, with Pastor Adam Baumann officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, June 27, at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton, and one hour prior to service at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Vinton.

Paul was born February 17th, 1942, in Vinton, the son of Oran and Lucille (Kirkwood) Schellhase. He graduated from Garrison Consolidated School in 1960. Paul was married to Peggy Scheel, with two children blessing their union. The couple later divorced. On February 4th, 1978, Paul married the love of his life, Carol Walitshek Rommann, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Garrison.

Paul owned and operated Oran's Feed Service-later, Paul's Feed and Seed-in Garrison for 57 years. He was a successful businessman and supplier of donuts, priding himself on fair and honest business dealings. He faithfully served 58 years on the Garrison Fire Department from 1963-2021. In addition, he was a founding member of the Garrison First Responders, serving from 1982-2021, President of the Iowa Firefighter's Association (IFA) from 1989-1990, winner of the 1995 Governor's Award, former Mayor and City Councilmember of Garrison, and a lifelong member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.

In his leisure time, Paul was an avid hunter and fisherman, a dedicated NASCAR fan, and an unrivaled party host. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. Through all of his achievements, his proudest was his grandchildren. Paul never met a stranger and extended kindness and generosity to all. His jokes and anecdotes could bring a smile to anyone's face. He spent his life caring for others and is now rejoicing in Heaven.

Left to cherish Paul's memory are his wife of 46 years, Carol; three sons: Rodney (Meike) Rommann, Bradley (Brenda) Rommann, and Rickey (Tina) Rommann; two daughters: Traci (John) Malecek, and Amanda (Joshua) Erickson; fourteen grandchildren: Cristina, Jonathan, Emmie Dawn, Cameron, Jessica, Taylor, Morgan, Trevor, Raine, Ellie, Libbie, Molly, Caroline, and Ryne; seventeen great-grandchildren; brother, Don Schellhase; nieces and nephews: Scott, Laurie, Amy, Carrie, and Cory; his beloved dog, Biscuit Butterfuzz; and many other family members and lifelong friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Danial Schellhase, and Jeffrey Rommann; and sister-in-law, Mary Schellhase.
