Doug Dunkel, 73, passed away unexpectedly at his residence, Monday, August 5, 2024. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 12, 2024, at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton, with Pastor David Condry officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, August 11 at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service. Burial, will be in Green's Grove Cemetery, Center Point, with full military rites.
Doug was born November 15, 1950 in Iowa City, the son of Ernest John and Ruth Leona (Wenger) Dunkel. He attended school in Delaware and Jones County. He was a graduate of Hawkeye Tech with a degree in farm management. Doug proudly served in the United States Army from March 1969 to January 1971, and was deployed to the Vietnam War. He was successfully self-employed as the owner of Doug Dunkel Construction. He was very proud to have served the community.
In his leisure time, Doug enjoyed kayaking, mushroom hunting, camping, motorcycle riding, deer hunting, dancing, and wintering in Florida with Mary. He was a member of the Carpenters Union, VFW, Ducks Unlimited, and the Shellsburg American Legion.
Doug is survived by the "love of his life", Mary Fowler; son, Josh (Beth) Dunkel; brothers: Dan (Edna) Dunkel, and Rick (Tracy Vail) Dunkel; sister, Kathy (Tammy) Dunkel; and three grandchildren: Dakota, Nevada, and Montana.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Carol, Ernie, and Jack.
A memorial fund has been established.
