Carla Kay Sokol, 65, of Grinnell passed away peacefully on Sunday February 23rd next to her loving husband, Steve.

Born November 25th, 1959 in Iowa City, Iowa to Glen and Shirley (Schlicht) Aswegan. She grew up around Van Horne and graduated from Benton Community Schools in 1978. Carla was the 2nd youngest of 7 siblings.

On August 6th ,1983 Carla was united in marriage to Steve Sokol at the Belle Plaine Congregational Church. Shortly thereafter, they welcomed a son, Michael, and a daughter, Brandi.

Carla took pride in working at many restaurants in the Belle Plaine, Brooklyn and Grinnell areas including Lincoln Café, Brooklyn 80 Restaurant, Westside Diner and A&M Café to name a few. You could always tell if she was working, you just had to listen, as she was not shy when yelling from the kitchen. When not working at local restaurants, Carla could be found transporting kids to and from school and babysitting for many families over the years.

Even though she answered by many names Mom and Grandma were the ones that meant the most to her, sometimes without a blood connection.

Carla was honored as an administrative black belt with the World Taekwondo Federation-Grinnell TKD and could be seen on occasion executing a very effective backhand if needed.

Carla enjoyed many things including M&M memorabilia, doing Diamond Art, and going to the restaurant for her daily cup of coffee to harass the waitresses, especially Amanda.

Left to celebrate Carla's legacy are her husband Steve of Grinnell, children Michael (Sally) Sokol of Grinnell, Brandi (Jeremiah) Treece of Kirksville, Missouri, grandsons, Cameron (Marissa Papacek) Sokol, Dirk Sokol, and Joe Sokol all of Grinnell, foster granddaughters, Gabriela and Addison of Kirksville, Mo., a sister Connie (Keith Meyer) Huber of Cedar Rapids, a brother Richard (Sandy) Aswegan of Marion, a sister in law Susan (Dave) Pansegrau of Belle Plaine, her Mother-in-law Marilyn Sokol of Belle Plaine, and many other family and friends.

Carla was proceeded in death by her parents Glen and Shirley Aswegan, siblings: Russell, Robert, Randy, Cathy, and her father-in-law Ronald Sokol.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family.

Celebration of Life will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2025 at the Grinnell Eagles Club, Grinnell, IA
